Illegal mining operation leads to fatal accident in Zambia

Nine men died when a gravel pile collapsed on them at a quarry in Zambia, police reported on Monday.

The incident occurred while they were illegally loading gravel onto a truck.

The truck driver survived with injuries and was hospitalized.

The collapse took place on Sunday in Chongwe, located about 50 kilometers east of Lusaka.

Rescue operations recovered eight bodies before nightfall on Sunday. The ninth body was retrieved on Monday, according to police.

Chongwe District Commissioner Evans Lupiya confirmed that both the men and the truck were buried under the gravel.

An investigation by the police has begun.

Zambia has seen several fatal accidents involving illegal quarry or mine operations.

In December, nearly 30 informal miners died in a copper mine when heavy trains caused landslides, entombing them in tunnels.
