Ivory Coast court hands 10-year sentences to opposition figures

Ivory Coast sentenced two officials from ex-president Laurent Gbagbo’s party to 10 years in prison for endangering state security.

Damana Pickass was convicted of plotting to overthrow the government in a 2021 military barracks attack.

Justin Koua was sentenced for leading protests against President Alassane Ouattara’s third term and illegal weapons possession.

Prosecutors sought 20-year sentences, but defense lawyers plan to appeal the verdicts.

PPA-CI leader Sebastien Dano Djedje called the trials “judicial harassment” targeting Gbagbo ahead of this year’s election.

Despite being ineligible, Gbagbo has announced his candidacy, warning against silencing political opposition.
