Kenya has confirmed two additional cases of mpox, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 33.
The new cases were identified in the counties of Kericho and Taita Taveta, according to a press release issued by Mary Muriuki, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Health.
The outbreak has now spread across 12 counties in Kenya.
The Ministry of Health has implemented several measures to contain the outbreak, including enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and public education campaigns on mpox prevention and control.
Mpox, a viral disease, is characterized by high fever and skin lesions.
In 2022, outbreaks were reported in over 70 countries worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency of international concern.
The Democratic Republic of Congo remains the country most severely affected by the mpox outbreak in Africa, with over 49,000 suspected cases and 1,100 confirmed deaths reported since January 2024.
