Kenya halts Haiti police mission amid political turmoil

Kenya has suspended its plans to dispatch police to Haiti amidst escalating violence, a top official revealed on Tuesday.

The decision follows the resignation of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry due to the dominance of armed gangs in the nation.

Korir Sing’oei, principal secretary for foreign affairs, stated to AFP, “There has been a fundamental change in circumstances as a result of the complete breakdown of law and order and the subsequent resignation of the PM of Haiti.”

Sing’oei emphasized the necessity of a political administration in Haiti for the deployment of police forces. Kenya will await the establishment of a new constitutional authority before revisiting the matter.

Despite this pause, Kenya remains dedicated to leading the Multinational Security Support mission sanctioned by the UN Security Council last October.

The crisis in Haiti has worsened in recent weeks, marked by widespread violence, looting by armed bandits, and mounting concerns about a potential famine.

Kenya had planned to send up to 1,000 personnel to Haiti, but legal obstacles have hindered the implementation of these plans.
