On Thursday, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) demanded accountability from Kenyan police for their violent actions against journalists covering protests since June.
The organization criticized the excessive force used against reporters and protesters alike.
Kenya has experienced violent anti-government demonstrations, resulting in at least 60 deaths and numerous disappearances.
The police have been accused of responding with excessive force, including rubber bullets and tear gas.
Recently, two AFP journalists were injured by tear gas canisters fired directly at them by police.
RSF condemned the police for their “brutality” and “impunity,” citing the use of tear gas and rubber bullets to intimidate and silence journalists.
Arnaud Froger of RSF highlighted that police failure to identify or punish officers responsible for violence represents “shameless impunity.”
Despite footage showing police targeting journalists, no action has been taken against the perpetrators.
RSF has referred the issue to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which has yet to respond.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s police spokesperson claimed a commitment to collaborate with the media, despite Kenya’s low press freedom ranking.
