Libyan parliament terminates Dbeibeh-led government’s term

On Tuesday, Libya’s parliament decided to end the term of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh’s Tripoli-based government.

They declared the East Libya-based cabinet of Osama Hammad as the legitimate government until a new unified one is selected.

Parliamentary spokesman Abdullah Belhaiq announced that the assembly recognized Hammad’s cabinet and named Aguila Saleh, the parliament’s speaker, as the new commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, replacing the Presidency Council.

There has been no immediate response from Dbeibeh’s government or the Presidency Council regarding these decisions.

This shift follows the formation of a new national referendum agency by the Presidency Council, which the parliament rejected.

Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, with the country now divided between rival administrations.

The UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Dbeibeh governs the west, while Hammad’s government operates from Benghazi in the east.

UN-led efforts to organize elections have stalled, prolonging Libya’s political deadlock and worsening the security situation in the oil-rich country.
