A devastating boat accident on Lake Malawi has resulted in the deaths of at least eleven people, according to police reports on Saturday.
The vessel, carrying thirty passengers en route to Likoma Island, capsized under circumstances that remain unclear.
Northern police spokesperson Maurice Chapola confirmed the fatalities and reported that nine individuals are still missing.
Eight survivors are currently receiving medical treatment in a local hospital for injuries sustained in the tragic incident.
Search and rescue operations are actively underway to locate the remaining missing passengers.
Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has called for a thorough investigation into the cause of this “tragic” capsizing.
President Chakwera extended his condolences, stating, “We keep in our prayers the souls of the eleven who are confirmed dead and wish a quick healing for the eight who have sustained injuries.”
Authorities have noted a concerning increase in boat accidents within the country recently.
Overloading and adverse weather conditions are among the potential contributing factors being examined by investigators.
