Mauritius PM concedes possible election defeat

Mauritius’ Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth admitted on Monday that his political alliance, L’Alliance Lepep, is likely to face a significant defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary election.

“L’Alliance Lepep is heading towards a huge defeat. I have tried to do what I can for the country and the population. The population has decided to choose another team. I wish good luck to the country,” Jugnauth told reporters.

The election saw voters selecting representatives for 62 parliamentary seats from 68 parties and five political alliances for the next five-year term.

The winning party or coalition that secures a majority in parliament will claim the prime ministership.
