Nigerian jail wall collapse due to floods, frees hundreds

Almost 300 prisoners escaped from a Maiduguri prison in northeastern Nigeria last week following severe floods.

The flooding, which brought down prison walls, allowed 281 inmates to flee, officials reported on Sunday.

Nigerian Correctional Services spokesperson Umar Abubakar confirmed that seven of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured.

Security forces are continuing their efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives.

The floods, which resulted from a dam overflow due to heavy rains, caused significant damage to the prison and staff quarters.

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, experienced its worst floods in decades, devastating large parts of the city.

In addition to the jailbreak, the flooding has wreaked havoc across Borno state.

At least 30 people have died, and over a million others have been affected, according to the emergency services.

Many have been forced into displacement camps as crocodiles and snakes washed into the city from a damaged zoo.

Efforts to address the widespread destruction and recapture the remaining escaped prisoners are ongoing.
