Nigerian Olympic meets deadline for 2030 Games interest

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed its expression of interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

They met the March 28th deadline, signaling the nation’s ambition on the global sporting stage.

However, a formal bid hinges on the crucial backing of the Nigerian government.

Nigeria previously aspired to host the 2014 Games but ultimately lost to Glasgow.

NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya stated that hosting in Abuja would offer a distinctive chance.

This opportunity would allow Nigeria to highlight its progress, elevate its international reputation, and inject dynamism into its sports scene.

Abuja last hosted a significant multi-sport event, the African Games, in 2003.

The NOC believes this past experience provides a strong base for successfully managing the complexities of the Commonwealth Games.

They emphasized Nigeria’s capability in logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development.

The NOC also highlighted the compelling narrative of national advancement that hosting would provide.

The next Commonwealth Games are scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to escalating costs.
