Saving the mysterious African manatee at Cameroon hotspot

Award-winning marine biologist Aristide Takoukam Kamla has dedicated himself to protecting the elusive African manatee, a critically endangered species found in the freshwaters of western Africa.

His research focuses on Lake Ossa in Cameroon, where he has spent years observing these shy creatures.

While initial expectations were influenced by images of manatees in other regions, Takoukam Kamla discovered that the African manatee exhibits unique behaviors and requires specialized observation techniques.

Despite being listed as “vulnerable,” Takoukam Kamla believes the true status of the African manatee is more precarious due to ongoing threats such as poaching and habitat destruction.

He established the African Marine Mammal Conservation Organisation (AMMCO) to address these challenges.

One significant success was the collaborative effort to combat the invasive giant salvinia that had choked the lake, bringing together scientists and local fishermen.

However, challenges remain, including the impact of human activities on the lake’s ecosystem and the need to balance conservation efforts with the livelihoods of local communities.

Takoukam Kamla emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with local communities and developing sustainable eco-tourism initiatives to ensure the long-term conservation of the African manatee.
