Sonko to lead Senegal’s government after election sweep

Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, confirmed on Monday that he would remain head of government despite mounting speculation.

His announcement follows the Pastef party’s landslide victory in snap parliamentary elections on November 17, securing 130 of 165 seats.

This historic majority stirred debate over whether Sonko should step down as prime minister to preside over the national assembly.

Critics argued that leading the parliament might ensure institutional balance and mitigate potential conflicts within the executive branch.

Sonko has been a cornerstone of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration, playing a key role in his March election win.

Since assuming office in April, Sonko has spearheaded significant government initiatives during a critical period for the West African nation.

Speaking at the national assembly, he announced, “I’m staying on as prime minister. The president needs me by his side.”

He emphasized his commitment, adding, “We have begun essential work, and it is imperative we continue.”

With Sonko retaining his role, Malick Ndiaye, a trusted ally and transport minister, was elected as the new assembly president.

The Pastef party’s overwhelming victory provides Senegal’s leadership a clear mandate to tackle pressing issues like inflation and unemployment.

Sonko’s decision ensures stability at the helm of government as Senegal embarks on its ambitious reform agenda.
