South Africa urged for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon on Saturday, following Israel’s extended airstrikes that have killed hundreds and displaced thousands of civilians.
The South African government expressed grave concern over what it described as “extrajudicial killings,” including the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
In a statement, the foreign ministry condemned the widespread injuries caused by Israel’s airstrikes, calling them a violation of human rights and humanitarian law.
The ministry said these actions were worsening the already tense situation in the Middle East and undermining peace efforts.
South Africa expressed its solidarity with Lebanon and vowed support in the wake of the attacks.
Last year, South Africa took Israel to the International Court of Justice, accusing it of genocide during military actions in Gaza.
The government called for an international investigation into the recent attacks in Lebanon, seeking accountability for what it labeled “premeditated crimes.”
South Africa reiterated its call for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need to prevent a broader regional conflict.
