South Africa extends offer to mediate in Israeli-Palestinian conflict

South Africa is prepared to assist in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with President Cyril Ramaphosa stating on Thursday that the country is leveraging its conflict resolution expertise for this purpose.

Ramaphosa additionally urged the immediate and unconditioned establishment of “humanitarian corridors” in the Middle East to facilitate the swift delivery of aid to those in urgent need. This call comes in the aftermath of days of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, which were carried out in response to a weekend attack by Hamas fighters.

“We remain gravely concerned at the devastating escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the atrocities committed against civilian populations. We call for the immediate cessation of violence and the exercise of restraint,” Ramaphosa said in a statement.

“South Africa stands ready to work with the international community and to share our experience in mediation and conflict resolution as we have done on the continent and around the world.”
