Tanzania police investigate viral video of alleged gang-rape

Tanzanian authorities are investigating a disturbing viral video that appears to show five men gang-raping a young woman, sparking widespread outrage across the East African nation.

The police have yet to confirm whether the suspects are military personnel, despite circulating rumors.

Authorities reported that the investigation is progressing, though they have not verified if any arrests have been made. They have also dismissed claims that the victim died from the assault, assuring the public that she is “very safe.”

In a statement posted on X, the police urged the public to stop sharing the video to prevent further trauma to the victim and her family. The video began circulating on Sunday and has elicited strong reactions in Tanzania’s conservative society, which is grappling with a rise in gender-based violence.

The incident reportedly took place in Yombo Dovya, a suburb of Dar es Salaam.

The police have called for calm while they continue their investigation and promised to release detailed information once legal procedures are complete.

Human rights organizations and social media users are pressing for swift and decisive action. The Legal and Human Rights Centre cautioned that neglecting such issues could lead to more frequent occurrences. The Tanganyika Law Society condemned the act as a severe breach of both legal standards and societal norms.

Home Affairs Minister Hamad Masauni mentioned that the suspects are “already” in custody but did not provide further details.
