TikToker Zazou Youssef accused of terrorism set for French trial

An Algerian online influencer will stand trial in France next month on charges of inciting terrorism, prosecutors announced Saturday.

The 25-year-old suspect, known on social media as Zazou Youssef, was remanded in custody on Friday in the western city of Brest.

He will face trial on February 24 on a charge of “publicly advocating an act of terrorism,” facing up to seven years in prison and a substantial fine.

The charges stem from a video posted on TikTok on December 31, where Yousseff allegedly called for attacks in France and violence in Algeria.

Following the video’s emergence, French authorities launched an investigation.

The suspect, residing in France on a temporary permit, had a prior criminal record, including a conviction for vandalism during riots in 2023.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau emphasized that the suspect “must answer for his actions in court.”

TikTok swiftly responded to the incident, banning the account for violating its rules against hate speech.
