At least 21 people were killed and four others seriously injured when two minibuses and a station wagon collided in South Africa’s Western Cape province, authorities said on Monday.
The crash occurred at about 11.30 pm local time on Sunday on the N1 highway between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
The collision forced authorities to close the highway in both directions. Motorists were urged to use alternative routes, expect delays and exercise extreme caution.
Minibus taxis are South Africa’s main form of transport for millions of people, carrying passengers to work and school as well as between towns, provinces and across national borders.
