The death toll from the garbage collapse in Kampala has climbed to 25, with no hope of finding survivors, according to a minister’s statement on Tuesday.
The massive garbage heap in Kiteezi, a northern district of Uganda’s capital, collapsed on Saturday, burying people and livestock beneath it.
Uganda’s state minister for disaster preparedness, Lillian Aber, confirmed the recovery of 25 bodies by Monday evening, with no survivors expected.
Heavy rains are hindering rescue efforts, as special forces join the search.
A 200-meter buffer zone has been established, and residents have been evacuated.
The 36-acre Kiteezi landfill, active since 1996, is now closed.
Kampala’s mayor warned that uncollected garbage is piling up, posing a potential health risk.
