Uganda investigates fatal landfill landslide as toll hits 21

The death toll from a landslide at a large garbage dump in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, has reached 21.

Rescue workers are still searching for survivors amidst the debris, police reported on Sunday.

After weeks of heavy rain, a massive pile of garbage at Kampala’s only landfill collapsed late Friday, destroying homes on its edge while residents were asleep.

The search for more survivors continues.

President Yoweri Museveni ordered the prime minister to organize the relocation of residents living near the dump.

Investigations into the landslide’s cause are underway, and officials found negligent will face action.

Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed 14 people have been rescued, with the possibility of more trapped beneath the rubble.

The exact number of missing people remains unknown, he added.

The Red Cross has set up tents for displaced residents.

The Kiteezi landfill has served Kampala for decades, with residents voicing concerns over pollution.

Similar tragedies have occurred in Ethiopia and Mozambique.
