The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced on Monday that it is investigating a United Airlines flight that experienced sudden, unexpected movement on Friday while en route from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington, D.C., resulting in injuries to passengers and crew.
The incident occurred aboard United Flight 613, a Boeing 787, as it flew over Ivory Coast airspace. Ivory Coast aviation authorities have delegated the investigation to the NTSB, which is expected to release a preliminary report within 30 days.
According to United Airlines, the flight, which had 245 passengers, three pilots, and eight flight attendants on board, returned to Lagos after the sudden aircraft movement, combined with a technical issue. The plane safely landed back in Lagos, and four passengers and two flight attendants were treated for minor injuries at a hospital and later released.
“We are working with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria to understand the cause of this event,” United said in a statement.
