Zimbabwe hosts SADC summit amid regional security concerns

Heads of state and government from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will convene in Zimbabwe’s capital this Saturday for the 44th summit of the bloc.

The summit, themed “Promoting innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards an industrialized SADC,” will focus on economic and industrial advancements.

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa will assume the chairmanship of the 16-member bloc, succeeding Angola’s President João Lourenço in leading the organization.

On Friday, the SADC Organ Troika ministerial committee met in Harare.

Zambian Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe highlighted the organ’s role in fostering regional peace and security.

Haimbe, as Zambia transfers the chair to Tanzania, called for renewed commitment to address regional issues like terrorism and the worsening security situation in eastern DR Congo.
