Fortuna Mining announced on Monday that the government of Burkina Faso has no plans to revoke its existing mining permits.
The Canadian mining company made the statement following recent remarks from Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traore.
On Saturday, Traoré stated that the country intends to withdraw certain mining permits held by foreign companies.
However, he did not specify which companies or permits would be affected by this decision.
Traoré also emphasized the country’s intention to increase its own gold production as part of the new strategy.
His comments raised concerns among foreign mining companies operating in Burkina Faso, which is rich in gold reserves.
Despite these remarks, Fortuna Mining reassured its investors that their operations remain unaffected by the government’s new direction.
The company’s spokesperson said they maintain open communication with Burkina Faso’s authorities to ensure compliance with local regulations.
Burkina Faso, one of Africa’s top gold producers, has been navigating political instability since a military takeover in January 2022.
The current government has expressed its intention to gain greater control over natural resources, raising uncertainties for international mining firms operating in the country.
