Congo OKs Starlink after lifting earlier ban

The Democratic Republic of Congo has granted a license to Elon Musk’s Starlink.

This marks a significant reversal of the government’s earlier stance.

The satellite internet provider will commence operations in the country soon.

Starlink, a SpaceX unit, is rapidly expanding its African presence.

They recently secured licenses in Somalia and Lesotho during April.

Congo suffers from low internet connectivity, impacting a large portion of its population.

Previously, the government resisted Starlink access due to security concerns.

Military officials feared its potential use by rebel groups like the M23.

In March 2024, authorities officially banned Starlink usage, threatening sanctions.

However, the Congolese Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority made a surprising announcement.

They confirmed the issuance of a license to Starlink. The company is expected to launch its services in the coming days.

Starlink is also actively seeking to establish operations in neighboring Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni recently held productive discussions with company representatives.
