Italian energy giant Eni has unveiled its second Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility for deployment off the Republic of Congo.
Named “Nguya,” the FLNG was launched from Wison Heavy Industry’s shipyard in Nantong, China, on Saturday, signaling a major step in boosting Congo’s LNG capacity.
The Nguya FLNG boasts a liquefaction capacity of 2.4 million tons per annum (MTPA), complementing the existing Tango FLNG.
Operational since December 2023, the Tango FLNG has a capacity of 0.6 MTPA.
Together, the two facilities will elevate the Congo LNG project’s total liquefaction capacity to 3 MTPA by the end of 2025, Eni confirmed in a statement.
Eni signed an agreement in 2022 with Wison Heavy Industry to establish the FLNG unit, underscoring its commitment to increasing LNG production and exports from Congo.
The Republic of Congo became an energy exporter in February 2024, when it shipped its first LNG cargo to Italy, further diversifying its economic prospects.
Guido Brusco, Eni’s Chief Operating Officer for Global Natural Resources, expressed pride in Eni’s role, stating, “We were the first to recognize the potential of Congo’s gas for both domestic power and export.”
