Egypt has announced a new natural gas discovery in the Nile Delta, reinforcing its energy ambitions and supply outlook.
The Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry said output is estimated at around 50 million cubic feet per day from the new find.
It added that total national gas production currently stands at about 4.2 billion cubic feet per day across operating fields.
The discovery came after successful drilling of the exploratory well “Nidoco N-2” in an Eni-operated concession with BP participation.
Officials said the well was drilled onshore using advanced directional drilling technologies that reduced costs and improved operational efficiency significantly.
The ministry noted the site lies less than two kilometres from existing facilities, enabling rapid connection to production networks.
Early output is expected within weeks, as infrastructure proximity allows the new well to be integrated without major delays.
The West Abu Madi development area is operated by Eni with BP and Egypt’s Petrobel under the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.
Egypt’s gas consumption reaches about 6.2 billion cubic feet daily, exceeding domestic production and highlighting a persistent supply gap.
Demand rises sharply in summer months, climbing to around 7.2 billion cubic feet per day during peak electricity consumption.
Among key assets, the Zohr field remains central, though production has declined from its peak in recent years.
Discovered in 2015, Zohr once produced 3.2 billion cubic feet daily in 2022 before falling to around 1.25 billion in 2025.
