Petrobras, Brazil’s state-run oil firm, has made a non-binding offer to acquire a significant stake in Galp Energia’s offshore oil discovery in Namibia.
This was confirmed by Petrobras’ exploration and production director, Sylvia dos Anjos, to Reuters.
If the offer is accepted, Petrobras will become the operator of the Mopane oil and gas field, which holds around 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Anjos shared this information in her first interview since starting her new role last month.
Anjos highlighted Petrobras’ expertise, saying, “We are the best deepwater operators.”
She emphasized that if Galp Energia doesn’t choose Petrobras, it would be their loss, speaking at an oil and gas conference in Sergipe.
Petrobras is looking to expand internationally due to challenges in obtaining environmental licenses for new exploration areas in Brazil.
Indigenous groups and environmental regulators have been slowing their drilling efforts near the Amazon River.
Over a dozen companies, including Exxon and Shell, are interested in acquiring a 40% stake in Galp Energia’s oil field.
Anjos did not specify if Petrobras’ bid was for the full 40% or a smaller portion.
