Gulf of Guinea becomes gas hub as Nigeria, E Guinea sign deal

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo signed a Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project agreement on Wednesday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea’s capital, to boost gas exploration.

The agreement covers legislative measures, ownership, operations, and gas transit regulations for the pipeline. Tinubu highlighted its potential to generate employment and enhance economic cooperation during his three-day visit to Malabo.

Both leaders discussed employment creation, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution strategies for Africa. Tinubu stressed the need for self-reliance in addressing regional issues and reducing external dependency.

Tinubu emphasized that African nations must unite to tackle challenges like inadequate capital, industrialization, and research. Equatorial Guinea’s president echoed the call for deepened cooperation with Nigeria on critical areas.

Equatorial Guinea’s leader also reaffirmed Africa’s goal of securing a permanent UN Security Council seat and pledged to work with Nigeria towards that vision. An analyst noted the pipeline project’s potential to enhance economic growth for both nations.
