A Chinese-Moroccan joint venture on Wednesday inaugurated Morocco’s first factory for electric vehicle battery components, marking a regional milestone.
The facility, developed by Cobco—a partnership between China’s CNGR Advanced Materials and Morocco’s royal holding company Al Mada—signals a major step in green technology.
Once fully operational, the factory is expected to produce 70 GWh worth of components annually, enough to power nearly one million electric vehicles.
The first production phase will focus on nickel-manganese-cobalt precursor cathodes, key materials used in both EV batteries and energy storage systems.
Cobco announced that the project will eventually expand into three interconnected facilities, including a metal refining site and a battery recycling plant.
This initiative combines China’s dominance in battery manufacturing with Morocco’s rising status as a renewable energy hub in North Africa.
Currently, renewable sources account for 38 percent of Morocco’s electricity output, reflecting a broader national push for sustainable infrastructure.
The launch places Morocco on the map as a future player in the global electric vehicle supply chain and green energy economy.
