Morocco plans to legalize cryptocurrencies

Morocco’s central bank governor, Abdellatif Jouahri, announced the ongoing adoption process of a draft law to regulate cryptocurrencies, currently banned since 2017 but still used unofficially.

Speaking at an international conference in Rabat, Jouahri revealed that Bank Al Maghrib is also studying a central bank digital currency (CBDC) to enhance financial inclusion and achieve public policy goals.

Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies, CBDCs are directly controlled by central banks.
