Morocco targets airport boost by 2030

Morocco has announced an ambitious plan to double its airport capacity by 2030, aiming to accommodate 80 million passengers annually, up from the current 38 million.

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch revealed the expansion strategy as part of the country’s preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal, highlighting its broader goals to boost tourism.

The plan includes significant upgrades at key airports. Casablanca’s airport will see its capacity grow to 23.3 million passengers, while popular tourist destinations like Marrakech and Agadir will increase to 14 million and 6.3 million passengers, respectively.

Morocco’s tourism sector is already booming, having welcomed a record 15.9 million tourists in the first 11 months of 2024, surpassing last year’s total. This surge is attributed to increased air routes, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism.

In addition to airport expansion, the country is enhancing its transportation infrastructure. A high-speed train network will extend to Marrakech before the World Cup, with plans to reach Agadir in the future.

Morocco also aims to significantly expand its rail network by 2040, increasing the number of cities served to 43, covering 87% of the population.
