Mozambique President Daniel Chapo met with TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne on Monday to discuss several key energy projects in the country, including the long-delayed $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) development.
While the Mozambique LNG project, initially slated for completion by 2029, has been delayed due to security challenges, TotalEnergies reaffirmed its commitment to resuming the project.
During the meeting, both parties acknowledged the importance of the project for Mozambique’s economic growth and emphasized the need to ensure a stable environment for its successful implementation.
Furthermore, the discussion extended to potential gas-to-power projects for the local population, aiming to leverage natural gas resources to improve domestic energy access.
Pouyanne also highlighted the challenges faced by the $5 billion hydropower dam and plant project being developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with EDF and Sumitomo.
He emphasized the crucial need for robust power transmission infrastructure to ensure the project’s viability and attract further investment.
The meeting underscores the significance of these energy projects for Mozambique’s economic development and the importance of addressing the challenges that hinder their successful implementation.
