Tech magnate Elon Musk urged for the elimination of trade tariffs between the United States and Europe, advocating a sweeping free trade zone across the Atlantic.
Speaking via video-link at a congress hosted by Italy’s right-wing League Party in Florence, Musk emphasized the need for open markets and unrestricted labor mobility.
“At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation,” he said.
Musk’s remarks came just days after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 20% tariff on imports from European Union countries, including Italy, which holds a trade surplus with the U.S.
Interviewed by League leader Matteo Salvini, Musk also called for easing restrictions on cross-continental labor, saying individuals should have the right to work on either side of the Atlantic.
“If people wish to work in Europe or wish to work in North America, they should be allowed to do so,” Musk noted.
A known supporter of Europe’s right-wing movements, Musk has voiced alignment with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Brothers of Italy party, as well as Salvini’s League.
The League and Meloni’s party advocate strict immigration controls, tax cuts, and tough-on-crime policies—an agenda Musk has shown public sympathy for.
Earlier on Saturday, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, also of the League, warned against retaliatory tariffs, calling instead for a “de-escalation” with the U.S.
Musk recently thanked Salvini for endorsing Starlink, his satellite communications firm, as Italy considers upgrading its defense and communication infrastructure.
