Nigeria plans purchase of 24 fighter jets from Italy

Nigeria is set to enhance its air force capabilities with plans to acquire 24 fighter jets from Italy’s Leonardo, according to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the air force spokesperson.

The decision aims to modernize the country’s fleet and bolster its defense against insurgencies, particularly in the northeast where Boko Haram and the Islamic State regional affiliate operate, alongside prevalent issues of kidnapping and banditry nationwide.

The acquisition will see the arrival of the aircraft in four batches, each consisting of six M-346 fighter jets.

In a statement released on Friday, Gabkwet confirmed that the first batch of six aircraft is expected to reach Nigeria before the year’s end.

This development comes in the wake of a recent visit by Claudio Sabatino, Leonardo’s vice president, to Nigeria’s air force chief in Abuja on Wednesday.

As part of the agreement, Leonardo will also provide a minimum of 25 years of maintenance support for the newly acquired jets, ensuring their operational readiness and longevity.

The decision to acquire these fighter jets underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its air force’s capabilities and addressing security challenges within its borders.

The ongoing presence of Boko Haram and other insurgent groups in the northeast has necessitated a proactive approach to combat these threats effectively.

Additionally, the country grapples with widespread incidents of kidnapping and banditry, further highlighting the need for a robust defense strategy.

With the impending arrival of the M-346 fighter aircraft, Nigeria aims to significantly enhance its ability to respond swiftly and effectively to security threats across the nation.

The aircraft’s advanced capabilities and Leonardo’s commitment to long-term maintenance support are expected to contribute to Nigeria’s efforts in safeguarding its citizens and combating insurgency and criminal activities.

This strategic move marks a crucial step towards modernizing the air force and ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
