Nigeria’s Dangote cancels service as repairs finish early

Nigeria’s Dangote oil refinery has cancelled its planned June maintenance for its 204,000 barrels per day gasoline-making unit. This decision comes after the refinery completed necessary works during an unplanned shutdown that occurred from April 7 to May 11, according to industry monitor IIR.

During this unscheduled outage, the Dangote refinery increased its exports of residual products, such as straight run fuel oil. Simultaneously, exports of finished products like jet fuel and gasoil experienced a decrease, as reported by shipping trade analytics firm Kpler. Kpler’s data also indicates that Nigeria’s gasoline imports saw a 24% month-on-month increase in April, reaching 157,000 barrels per day.

Dangote had initially scheduled a 30-day maintenance period in June for its gasoline-making residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) unit.

The 650,000 barrels per day refinery, established in Lagos by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, commenced processing crude oil into products, including gasoil, naphtha, and jet fuel, in January 2024. Gasoline production began in September.

The Dangote refinery has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.
