Spirits giant Diageo sells stake in Guinness Ghana to Castel

Global beverage giant Diageo has announced the sale of its 80.4% stake in Guinness Ghana to Castel Group for $81 million.

The transaction, unveiled on Tuesday, is part of Diageo’s ongoing strategy to refine its operating model across Africa’s diverse markets.

Despite relinquishing its controlling stake, Diageo will retain ownership of the Guinness brand and other prominent labels produced by Guinness Ghana.

These will be licensed back to the company under the new agreement.

This move follows similar divestments by Diageo in recent years.

The company sold its stakes in Guinness Nigeria in 2024 and Guinness Cameroon in 2022, with Castel Group also acquiring the latter.

In 2023, Diageo launched a dedicated spirits company to bolster its presence and expand its spirits portfolio in the region.

The company emphasized its commitment to an “asset-light” beer model, designed to adapt to Africa’s unique market dynamics and local conditions.

Amid recent rumors of a potential Guinness brand sale, Diageo firmly denied any plans to part ways with the iconic label.
