Donald Trump said the United States is considering financial support for the United Arab Emirates, including a potential currency swap arrangement, as regional tensions linked to the Iran war raise economic concerns.
Speaking to CNBC, Trump confirmed that a swap line was “under consideration,” describing the UAE as “a good ally.”
“They’re really led by incredible people… I mean, I’m surprised, because they are really rich,” he said, adding that Washington is already supporting the country indirectly through its role in the conflict involving Iran.
The remarks come after a report by The Wall Street Journal said the UAE’s central bank governor discussed the possibility of a currency swap line with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve officials during meetings in Washington last week.
The proposal is seen as a contingency measure in case the ongoing conflict destabilises the oil-rich Gulf state’s financial system.
“If the UAE had a problem — I find it hard to believe — but if they had a problem, we would be there for them,” Trump said.
