Ugandan coffee soars as south sees big yields

Uganda’s coffee exports experienced a significant boost in June 2024, with a rise of 18.2% compared to the same month last year, according to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA).

This positive trend is attributed to a bountiful harvest in the country’s southern and southwestern regions, which are currently in the midst of their coffee picking season.

The UCDA reported a shipment increase from 563,832 60-kilogram bags in June 2023 to 667,037 bags in June 2024.

Coffee, along with gold, stands as one of Uganda’s most crucial exports and a significant source of foreign currency earnings.

The nation’s coffee revenue for the 12-month period ending in June 2024 reached $1.1 billion, reflecting a substantial increase from $846 million earned in the previous year.

This surge in coffee exports signifies positive news for Uganda’s economy.

The robust harvest and rising revenue highlight the importance of the coffee sector for the nation’s financial well-being. With the ongoing harvest season, it’s possible that Uganda’s coffee exports may continue to see further growth in the coming months.
