The Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government development fund, has awarded Sierra Leone a five-year $480 million grant aimed at providing reliable and affordable electricity to 4.6 million people.
Currently, only about 30% of the country has access to electricity, with rural access plummeting to below 5%.
The grant will support three key projects designed to enhance power network coverage, improve reliability, and promote sustainability in the energy sector. This initiative comes after the resignation of Sierra Leone’s energy minister in April, following an extended electricity crisis caused by unpaid debts to energy providers.
