Algeria’s Red Crescent Society announced on Sunday that Algeria will send 150 tons of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which is currently under siege amidst a deadly Israeli offensive.
The aid will be transported via eight military aircraft from Blida, located south of the capital Algiers, to Egypt’s El-Arish Airport near the Gaza Strip, as stated by the society in a press release.
This assistance is described as a reflection of Algeria’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are enduring continuous aggression, particularly in Gaza, under an unjust blockade.
Algeria initiated an airlift to El-Arish Airport last October to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
The latest aid shipment comes amid a deadly military offensive by Israel in the Palestinian territory, which was prompted by a cross-border attack led by the Palestinian group Hamas, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis.
Since then, over 32,200 Palestinians have lost their lives and more than 74,500 have been injured, amidst widespread destruction and shortages of essential supplies.
The blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip has further exacerbated the situation, particularly affecting the population in northern Gaza, who are on the brink of starvation.
The conflict has forced 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement, leading to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine. Additionally, 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, with an interim ruling issued in January ordering Tel Aviv to halt genocidal acts and ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the humanitarian crisis and bring about a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
