Belgium has requested the extradition of two suspects from the Netherlands and Spain as part of its investigation into the 2023 Islamist militant attack in Brussels that left two Swedish nationals dead and another injured.
According to Belgium’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the suspects are accused of assisting gunman Abdesalem Lassoued in acquiring the weapon used in the attack. One suspect was arrested in Spain last weekend, while the other was detained in the Netherlands the week before, though officials have not disclosed further details.
Dutch newspaper De Limburger reported that the suspect apprehended in the Netherlands is a 25-year-old man.
The attack occurred while Belgium was hosting Sweden for a Euro 2024 qualifying match. Lassoued, a 45-year-old Tunisian, claimed responsibility in an online video, identifying himself as a member of the Islamic State militant group. He was fatally shot by police following an overnight manhunt.
