Israel denounces China-brokered Palestine unity deal

Israel swiftly condemned a China-brokered agreement Tuesday that would bring Hamas into a “national reconciliation government” for post-war Gaza.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz stated, “Hamas rule will be crushed,” accusing Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, whose Fatah faction signed the deal, of supporting the group behind the October 7 attacks.

The U.S. and Israel both oppose any involvement of the resistance group in Gaza’s post-war governance. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, in Washington, vowed to continue the Gaza war until Hamas is destroyed.

The diplomatic conflict escalated as Israel bombarded Gaza, including Khan Yunis, where civilians were partially evacuated.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted senior Hamas and Fatah officials.

Hamas and Fatah, long-term rivals who fought in 2007, signed a deal for a “temporary national unity government” to govern all Palestinian territories.

China praised the agreement as a step toward reconciliation.
