Lebanon, Israel to meet in Washington for ceasefire talks

Lebanon’s presidency announced plans for a high-level meeting with Israel in Washington next week to discuss a potential ceasefire and negotiations.

The talks aim to ease tensions in the ongoing conflict involving Hezbollah, raising cautious hopes for diplomacy between the neighbouring countries.

According to the presidency, initial contact was made through a phone call linking Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors in Washington.

The United States State Department will host the meeting, reflecting Washington’s central role in mediating regional disputes.

The call also included the US ambassador to Lebanon, who participated from within the United States during the discussions.

Officials agreed that the first formal meeting would take place next Tuesday, setting the stage for structured diplomatic engagement.

The agenda will focus on declaring a ceasefire and determining a timeline for negotiations between Lebanon and Israel.

The proposed talks mark a rare moment of coordination, as both sides cautiously test the waters of diplomacy under US auspices.

While expectations remain tempered, the initiative signals a potential shift from confrontation toward dialogue after months of escalating tensions.

Observers note that even tentative steps toward negotiation could help stabilise a volatile border region long shaped by conflict.
