Palestinian resistance groups criticize new government

In response to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ announcement of a new government, several Palestinian resistance groups expressed concerns on Friday, fearing that the move would exacerbate divisions within the nation.

The Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and National Initiative groups jointly issued a statement questioning the viability of replacing one Prime Minister with another “from the same political environment.”

They criticized individual decisions and superficial steps like forming a new government without national consensus, which they argued would only reinforce unilateralism and deepen divisions.

President Abbas appointed Mohammad Mustafa as the new prime minister on Thursday, tasking him with forming a new government to replace Mohammad Shtayyeh, who resigned in February amid developments related to the Israeli war on Gaza.

Despite not being a member of Abbas’ Fatah movement, Mustafa is part of the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee.

The statement urged the Fatah movement to collaborate with Palestinian groups to manage the current stage in line with the Palestinian national cause and the people’s aspirations to liberate their land and sanctuaries.

Meanwhile, Israel’s retaliatory offensive on Gaza, initiated after a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, has resulted in over 31,000 fatalities and more than 73,000 injuries, accompanied by widespread destruction and shortages of essential supplies.

Israel’s blockade on the Palestinian enclave has pushed its population, particularly those in northern Gaza, to the brink of starvation.

According to the UN, approximately 85% of Gazans have been displaced due to the Israeli onslaught, facing acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.

Moreover, 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
