The Pentagon has released new documents detailing an alleged encounter with a mysterious black triangular aircraft that reportedly travelled at extraordinary speed before disappearing from view near a sensitive security facility in the western United States.
The incident, which reportedly occurred earlier this year, was described by federal agents with extensive operational experience working alongside US government agencies, according to documents made public on Friday.
The witnesses described an unidentified object resembling a triangular drone, with an estimated wingspan of between 2.75 and 4.5 metres.
They claimed the aircraft displayed unusual flight characteristics, including rapid acceleration, silent movement and an apparent absence of conventional propulsion systems.
According to the report, the object initially rose vertically above a ridgeline before hovering motionless for approximately 20 seconds.
It then accelerated sharply, reportedly reaching speeds comparable to a military fighter jet, before disappearing into a nearby canyon.
Some accounts estimated its speed at approximately 2,900 kilometres per hour, although no independent instrument measurements were provided to verify that figure.
The witnesses reported hearing no engine noise or sonic boom and observing no visible exhaust trail.
The exact location of the encounter and the identities of those involved were withheld from the publicly released documents.
No photographic evidence released
Despite the extraordinary nature of the claims, the Pentagon’s files contain no independently verified photographs or video recordings establishing what the witnesses observed.
Nine images accompanying the report depict a canyon landscape with small triangular shapes added to illustrate the object’s reported movements.
The illustrations do not constitute photographic evidence of the alleged encounter.
Investigators also reported finding no wreckage, ground damage or other physical evidence during a search of the area the following morning.
The Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which investigates unidentified anomalous phenomena, indicated that the case warranted further investigation because of similarities to other reported incidents in the western United States.
However, the released documents do not establish the object’s identity, origin or actual flight capabilities.
Trump administration continues UFO disclosures
The latest documents form part of the Trump administration’s wider effort to release previously classified or restricted government records concerning unidentified flying objects, now commonly referred to as unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs).
President Donald Trump ordered the disclosure of additional records earlier this year amid continuing public interest in allegations that US authorities possess information about unexplained aerial technologies.
The renewed scrutiny follows testimony before Congress in 2023 by a former US intelligence official who alleged that successive administrations had concealed information concerning unidentified aircraft and potentially extraterrestrial technology.
Those allegations have not established the existence of alien spacecraft or technology originating beyond Earth.
The latest Pentagon disclosures have renewed questions about what US intelligence and military agencies know about unexplained aerial sightings.
However, the reported black triangle encounter remains unresolved, with no independently verified physical evidence or recorded flight data available to establish whether the witnesses observed an advanced aircraft, an unfamiliar aerial phenomenon or something with a conventional explanation.
The Pentagon has not identified the object or suggested that it was of extraterrestrial origin.
