
President Vladimir Putin spoke with US President Donald Trump by phone Wednesday, discussing wars in Ukraine and Iran, according to an aide.
The call lasted more than an hour and a half and was initiated by the Russian side, aide Yury Ushakov said.
Putin described Trump’s decision to extend the Iran ceasefire regime as correct, saying it gives negotiations a chance and stabilises tensions.
Putin warned US or Israeli violent actions would bring severe consequences for Iran and its neighbours, calling a ground operation unacceptable and dangerous.
Russia said it remains committed to diplomatic efforts and offered assistance in resolving differences over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump stressed the importance of an early cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and expressed willingness to contribute in every possible way.
Trump believes a deal to end the Ukraine conflict is already close, according to the Russian presidential aide.
Putin, at Trump’s request, briefed him on the frontline situation, saying military objectives will be achieved but a negotiated outcome remains preferable.
Putin proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine during May 9 Victory Day celebrations, an idea reportedly endorsed by Trump.
The leaders also discussed potential economic and energy cooperation, with several large-scale initiatives already under consideration.
They agreed to continue maintaining contact through personal channels and representatives, according to the Kremlin aide.
Putin expressed sympathy to Trump over last week’s shooting at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner event in Washington, condemning politically motivated violence.
The previous publicly confirmed call between the leaders took place on March 9 and was initiated by the American side.
