Rebel forces have seized control of Aleppo’s civilian airport, marking a significant shift in Syria’s ongoing war.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied groups captured the airport on Saturday after government forces withdrew.
This is the first time rebels have taken such a key facility, alongside gaining control of dozens of strategic towns in Idlib and Hama provinces.
The Observatory reported that government troops offered no resistance as rebels launched a coordinated offensive over the past several days.
The escalation has drawn international attention, with Russian and Turkish foreign ministers discussing the situation in an urgent phone call.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan expressed “serious concern” over the developments.
Both nations emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to stabilize the situation, according to a statement from Moscow.
This surge in rebel activity highlights the fragility of Syria’s conflict zones, with implications for regional stability and international alliances.
The fall of Aleppo airport could further disrupt humanitarian efforts and deepen the suffering of civilians trapped in contested regions.
