Tensions rise as Philippines, China ships clash near Shoal

China’s Coast Guard accused a Philippine vessel of “deliberately colliding” with a Chinese ship in a “dangerous and unprofessional” way, as reported in statements on Monday.

The Coast Guard said the Philippine vessel entered waters near Second Thomas Shoal after being blocked from Sabina Shoal.

Two Philippine Coast Guard ships also “illegally intruded” near Sabina Shoal early Monday, according to spokesperson Gan Yu.

Gan Yu claimed the Philippines repeatedly caused issues and violated agreements related to resupply missions at Second Thomas Shoal.

China warned the Philippines to stop such actions or face consequences.

In response, the Philippine Coast Guard did not immediately comment.

China and the Philippines had agreed on a provisional arrangement in July after previous conflicts over Second Thomas Shoal.

China asserts almost the entire South China Sea, including both shoals, disregarding a 2016 Hague ruling that rejected Beijing’s extensive claims.
