Trinidad and Tobago police discover remains of infants in cemetery

Remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been discovered at a cemetery in Trinidad and Tobago, police confirmed on Saturday.

Authorities said the discovery was made at Cumuto Cemetery, located around 40 kilometres from the capital, Port of Spain.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service said preliminary findings suggest the case may involve unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.

Police reported the adult remains include four men and two women, with identification tags found on all but one male.

Two bodies, one male and one female, showed indications that autopsies had been carried out prior to burial or disposal.

Officials stressed that forensic examinations are ongoing to establish the origin of the remains and possible legal violations involved.

Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro described the discovery as deeply troubling and pledged a swift and sensitive investigation.

He said law enforcement agencies are pursuing the case with urgency and a commitment to uncovering the full truth.

Trinidad and Tobago, a twin-island nation near Venezuela, has faced rising violent crime in recent years.

The country recorded 623 murders in 2024, reflecting persistent security challenges across its population of about 1.5 million.

A US State Department report previously ranked the nation among the world’s most dangerous, citing a high murder rate.

Although killings fell by 42 percent the following year, authorities declared a state of emergency amid renewed violence concerns.
