Trump confirms US has held tariff discussions with China

President Donald Trump stated Thursday that the United States is engaged in talks with China regarding tariffs.

He expressed confidence in reaching a deal to resolve the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations.

“Yeah, we’re talking to China,” Trump confirmed to reporters in the Oval Office. He added that China had initiated contact “a number of times.”

Trump acknowledged that these discussions occurred after he significantly increased tariffs on Chinese goods, following China’s retaliatory measures to his global “Liberation Day” levies.

However, he remained vague about direct communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I’ve never said whether or not they’ve happened,” Trump responded when questioned about talks with Xi. “It’s just not appropriate.”

When pressed further by reporters on whether Xi had reached out to him, Trump stated, “You’d think it was pretty obvious that he has, but we will talk about that soon.”

The Trump administration’s imposition of substantial reciprocal tariffs has created tension with China, impacting global markets.

Trump also mentioned optimism regarding a potential agreement during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit, aimed at resolving US tariffs on the European Union.
