Turkey to support South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at ICJ

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Wednesday that Turkey will stand alongside South Africa in its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Fidan stated during a press conference in Ankara, alongside Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, that Turkey will formally intervene in the case once the legal documentation is finalized.

“Turkey will continue to support the Palestinian people in all circumstances,” he said.

The ICJ previously directed Israel in January to abstain from any actions that might breach the Genocide Convention and to ensure that its forces do not engage in genocidal activities against Palestinians.

This directive came after South Africa accused Israel of orchestrating state-led genocide in Gaza.

In January, President Tayyip Erdogan had indicated that Turkey was actively supplying evidence for the case before the ICJ, also known as the World Court.

Israel and its Western allies have dismissed the accusations as unfounded. A definitive ruling in South Africa’s ICJ lawsuit in The Hague could potentially span several years.
